Web Application Security: 10 Simple Steps to Protect Your App

Web application security

A single security problem can cost you customers, money and reputation. You don’t need to be a tech expert to take it seriously. Here’s a practical checklist to discuss with your development team.

1. Use HTTPS everywhere. It encrypts data between the user and your server. It’s now standard, and browsers warn users about sites without it.

2. Strong login protection. Require strong passwords and offer two-factor authentication (2FA). Never store passwords as plain text. They should be hashed.

3. Validate all user input. Hackers try to enter malicious code through forms, such as SQL injection or cross-site scripting. Check and clean everything that comes in.

4. Keep software updated. Old frameworks, plugins and libraries have known holes. Update them regularly.

5. Give people only the access they need. A support agent shouldn’t see financial reports. Use role-based permissions.

6. Protect your APIs. Mobile apps and web apps talk to servers through APIs. Secure them with proper authentication, limit how many requests one user can make, and never expose secret keys in the app code.

7. Back up your data. Do it automatically and store copies in a different place. Test that you can actually restore them.

8. Monitor and log activity. Keep a record of logins and errors. Set alerts for strange behaviour, like 100 failed login attempts in a minute.

9. Test for weaknesses. Run security checks before launch and regularly after. This includes vulnerability scans and penetration testing for important systems.

10. Plan for the worst. Know what you’ll do if something goes wrong: who to call, how to inform users, and how to recover.

Privacy Laws

If you collect user data, you may need to follow rules like GDPR (Europe), CCPA (California) or India’s DPDP Act. Ask your development partner how your app handles consent, data storage and deletion requests.

Security Is Ongoing

Security isn’t a one-time task. New threats appear all the time, so build regular reviews into your yearly plan.
